Grand Opening for El Ejido, Spain R&D Facility

This May, Syngenta Vegetable Seeds will welcome visitors as we unveil a modernized R&D facility in El Ejido, Almería, Spain. This $3 million investment enhances our global breeding innovation center, which focuses on developing seeds for tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, squash, and melon.

“Every investment we make is focused on one key principle – how can we better serve growers,” said Matthew Johnston, Global Head of Vegetable Seeds and Flowers at Syngenta. “This expanded and modernized facility in El Ejido highlights the importance of Spain in the global agricultural landscape while underscoring our commitment to accelerating our innovation to help growers who are dealing with volatile climates and challenging environments to grow produce and feed the world.”

The El Ejido facility, established in 1983, now employs 145 people across various functions. Key facility improvements include:

Upgraded greenhouses for year-round breeding
Redesigned pathology and quality labs
New seed processing area
Advanced digital tools implementation
