Future of Veg and Fields of Innovation Give Growers Insights
Syngenta hosted its Future of Veg field days from August 11 to 13, 2026, with events staged in Woodland, California, and Plainfield, Wisconsin. The Woodland trials centered on breeding innovations across several key commercial crop portfolios. The onion trials highlighted new long-day yellow and white selections, including the Roundo and Olympo varieties, which demonstrated bolting tolerance and strong skin quality. Breeders also presented an updated hot pepper lineup featuring regionally adapted ancho and jalapeño types, melons, and a diverse watermelon portfolio. The watermelon displays focused on seedless varieties, pollenizers, and rootstocks, led by the early-maturing crimson variety Valor and the large sugar baby type Bahama.
In Grootebroek, the Netherlands, the Fields of Innovation 2026 event brought together nearly 900 growers, processors, and industry leaders from more than 50 countries, alongside 250 students and young professionals. Attendees evaluated over 600 vegetable varieties in open-field trial plots. Crop highlights included brassicas featuring second-generation clubroot resistance covering strains Pb:0, 1, 2, and 3. The showcase also featured Syngenta’s first onion variety with high resistance to downy mildew, as well as biostimulant seed treatments for onions and spinach to improve stress tolerance and water-use efficiency.
Together, these gatherings demonstrated Syngenta’s regional portfolio performance across critical vegetable crops worldwide.
