Embracing AI Opportunities at Syngenta

Artificial Intelligence – AI – continues to dominate headlines and discussions around the world. But how do businesses realistically consider this trend, how do they find efficiencies without sacrificing integrity and reliability, and how do they integrate new systems into current working models?

These are all questions you might be asking for your businesses – and they’re questions Syngenta is considering, too.

“We’re looking for that sweet spot – using AI to enable but not replace, helping our experts make better decisions, faster, and with more accuracy,” said Brandon Leander, Syngenta Vegetable Seeds Head of IT and Digital. “Labor challenges continue to be a concern across the industry, and AI is a way we can help address it, even after considering cost of implementation.”

Putting AI to the Test

When it comes to finding the right place for AI at Syngenta Vegetable Seeds, we first looked at where we have the biggest opportunities and where big decisions could benefit from faster analysis and computing. Supply chain – specifically demand confirmation became our first target for AI enablement.

“Today, demand confirmation is manual,” Leander explained. “Line by line, our team determines what locations get what products based on demand forecasts – it’s complex, tedious, and involves specific variables.”

These variables can be placed into AI computing systems, with rules and standards that allow fast outcomes. Instead of 30 days of work, AI can present options in as little as 30 minutes. Teams validate and correct, if needed, and quickly have a plan for supply chain management.

“This will give us speedy decision making but more importantly, help reduce uncertainty in the supply chain for our customers,” Leander says.

AI has incredible opportunities to help assist businesses around the world in various tasks. Data management, data quality, and data ownership are some of the most important elements that can make or break working with AI in business. We’ll discuss this more in our next newsletter.
